BREAKING: Cause of death released in James Chasse case: “broad based blunt force trauma to the chest”

from the Portland Mercury

It’s official, James Chasse, the man who died in police custody on Sunday night, seems to have been beaten to death. Accidentally. And he didn’t die from a crack overdose—witnesses told the Oregonian that police on the scene indicated his arrest was cocaine related.

The Medical Examiner’s office has just determined that he “died as a result of a broad-based, blunt force trauma to his chest.” Additionally, the Medical Examiner has ruled Chasse’s death as accidental. The toxicology results were negative—which makes the cops’ alleged treatment of Chasse all the more shocking. You can read about the events leading up to his death, here.

UPDATE: According to Katu, which has spoken with the medical examiner, Chasse had “a number of broken ribs, which impaired his ability to breathe.”
